The UMass Lowell (UML) Bike Shop in conjunction with the Outdoor Adventure Program hosts a variety of bike rides as well as instructional programs and clinics.

Beginner Mountain Bike Series

Mountain-BikingMountain Biking is a great way to explore many of the natural areas around Lowell, get some exercise and have fun challenging yourself! This summer the UMass Lowell (UML) Bike Shop and Outdoor Outdoor Adventure Program will host a series of beginner mountain bike rides intended to introduce new riders to some of the area trails and teach the skills needed to enjoy them. Rental bikes are available in limited quantities and sizes. Please note your height and bike size preference in the sign up notes. If you don't know your size come to the Bike Shop and Outdoor Center and we will fit you for a bike. Helmets are required for all riders. Participants should already be able to ride a bike.

  • $30 UML Students / Faculty / Staff (includes bike rental)

Local Friendly Bike Rides

The Local-FriendlyLocal Friendly Bike Rides are here to for us to enjoy getting out on bikes in a relaxed and inclusive ride. We will visit some of our favorite spots in and around Lowell. Destination, pace and distances will be adjusted to best fit the ability of the group leaving no one behind. Come ride and have fun on Friday afternoon!

Cost: FREE UML Students / Faculty / Staff includes Free Wheelers bike rental

Bike Maintenance Basics Workshops

This workshop teaches participants the ABC's of bike maintenance. Participants will learn how to assess the condition of all parts of their bike, how to keep it clean and lubricated, and will provide an overview of basic tune up skills.

Each skill will be reviewed by a mechanic, then participants will practice on their own bike with feedback. No previous experience in bike repair or maintenance is required. Topics to be reviewed include air, brakes, chain, shifting, quick releases, cleaning and lubrication.

Can't make the class? No Problem. Drop in anytime for DIY open stand time and we can give you some pointers.

Learn to Ride a Bike

The Learn to Ride a Bike clinic is offered to help people who are interested in learning to ride a bike for the first time or after a long period of not riding. This instructional session will cover the essentials of riding a bike including choosing and fitting a bike, how to use the various components and practice riding in a calm and controlled environment. Lots of individual attention is available with 1:4 instructor to participant ratio. Rental bikes and helmets are included for use during the class.

Location: Outdoor Center and Bike Shop.
